OUR STORY

A community came together to make support closer to home.

MOHOR is a Kolkata-based organisation dedicated to supporting children with special needs and the families who care for them. Its beginnings were local: people in Kasba saw a need for an institution in their neighbourhood and started activities at 39/3, R.K. Chatterjee Road.

That first step continues to guide the work today. MOHOR brings care, learning, and family support together so children can develop skills, participate in their communities, and move towards greater independence.

The first steps

A need close to home

MOHOR began when a few people from Kasba recognised that children with special needs and their families needed a place to turn to. They started the institution's activities at the Recreation Club premises on R.K. Chatterjee Road.

As the Secretary, Samir Sengupta, wrote, the hope was for “the sapling of today” to grow into a shelter for many children. That image still captures the spirit of MOHOR: a local effort nurtured by a community.

Care takes shape

Support for the whole journey

Every child has their own strengths, needs, and pace. MOHOR's work brings together early identification and intervention, education, therapy, and support for families.

By sharing guidance with parents, caregivers, and teachers, the circle of support can continue beyond the centre and into a child's everyday life.

Learning that opens possibilities

MOHOR supports children to build communication, cognitive, academic, and vocational skills. The aim is not a single path, but meaningful progress shaped around each child's abilities and goals.

With the right encouragement and opportunities, children can grow in confidence and take a more active part in their families and communities.

Care that sees the child, not just the diagnosis.

We believe that a child's potential should never be defined by a diagnosis or by the barriers around them. Our responsibility is to listen, notice what helps, and build opportunities for every child to learn, communicate, and participate.

That means working alongside families, respecting each child's individuality, and helping create a more inclusive community.
